Vista Scares Me

In Uncategorized on February 28, 2007 at 11:54 pm

Here’s a story of an OS gone bad. Beyond bad. Evil.

I installed Vista on someone’s laptop. It was working fine for about a week then, somehow, the graphics card (not sure but it’s my best guess) failed. You could see things but there were lines everywhere and you couldn’t go into Vista. Clearing it and putting XP seemed to have repaired most of the problem… until it, again, stopped working. Now I’m fearing for my MacBook Pro’s life. I don’t want to get stuck with a very expensive paperweight! Plus all this “only Ultimate and Buisness in virtual machines” (which they seem to blame on bugs and holes. *Gasp* A flawed Microsoft product!) is pissing me off! I payed for Parallels to enjoy it (and I’ll probably pay again if they come out with that 3D support.) not to have it rot in my Applications folder. And there’s the fact I would have full support of XP with Boot Camp. I think I’m going to be going back to XP, then. No sense using an OS that the only new feature I use is the capability of making me fear using my computer.

My eyeTV Hybrid Just Got a Whole Lot Cooler

In Mac on February 24, 2007 at 12:10 pm

Although not the main reason I bought it (That being to play Wii on my Mac), I knew that the eyeTV could get HD programing over the air. I what I didn’t know is that this can be done with your everyday TV antenna. I tried out setting the eyeTV to the digital decoder and let it detect channels and I got, among others, ABC and NBC. So that means LOST and Law & Order in HD on my Mac! This all with a cheep $20 (if I remember correctly) indoor antenna. I hope the Oscars are in HD… not to mention that iPhone ad. And the icing on the cake is the fact eyeTV acts as a PVR with recording and live TV pause. :D I’m very happy. I’ll be happier if I can get some CSI, NCIS and NUMB3RS from CBS.

Zelda, eh?

In Wii on February 23, 2007 at 9:03 pm

Seems Zelda : Ocarina of Time is coming to Canadian Wii Monday. I’m almost done with Twilight Princess so I might be interested in investing into what every gamer and his grandma calls the greatest game of all times. I still have Link to the Past on my Wii that I haven’t played for some time and I’m a bit more interested in trying current and upcoming releases for the Wii so any new old Zelda will have to wait. But it’s nice to know I’ll be able to try it out whenever I feel like it (and get 1000 Wii points into my account).

the alt News (With a Dash of Zelda)

In Wii on February 22, 2007 at 8:10 pm

I have most of the iPod article finished. Amazing what you can do when you’re actually interested in what you’re doing. I’m about to start in Photoshop my version of the future iPod. So that’s going well…

(Zelda Spoiler Alert) I’m also done kicking Zant’s rear. This is, not before he did the same to my rear. But I guess there is no greater rush than to win a multi-stage boss battle with 3/4 of a heart to spare. By the way, that guy needs a shrink and fast! I saw him as the cool bad guy but he’s just really a complete nut with a cool mask. Plus, he might want to change religions. Ganonism isn’t exactly a popular choice.

Welcome To The Alternate Universe : Welcome To Microsoft Design Center

In Uncategorized on February 20, 2007 at 11:56 pm

Oh, crap! I must have click on some inter-dimensional portal or something. I’m somehow on some site showcasing Microsoft Design. I thought that was a commonly accepted oxymoron. It’s on a black background and what-the? Reflections? I thought Apple held the copyrights for those? And no offence to Mr. Reyes’ (shown at the right) abilities but a geeky guy dressed in no matter how much black won’t strike me as screaming “design.” As if that wasn’t odd enough, Apple is referenced on his page! They also talk of the S+ARCK Mouse by Philippe Starck MS did 3 years ago that looks like an Apple mouse with a stripe across it. They had to get a designer to make that? I guess they needed a cover for releasing a mouse like Apple’s. And, my gosh! Look at the image they have for “Team Blackshirt” (at the right) which seems to make widg… gadgets. It’s an apple. With bites out of it. An apple. with bites… (It’s explained in the article but it doesn’t take away from the creepiness)

We sure as hell aren’t in Kansas anymore!

What The Doctor Ordered

In DS, Like a Drug, Wii on February 20, 2007 at 10:45 pm

I’m sick. It’s true! I’m affected with two diseases. First off is Replayaphobia. It’s the fear or more the lack of will to relive a story. For example, when I read a book, I find no reason and have no will to reread it. I know how it ends and I know how it happened. And no amount of gameplay slapped on to a story will change that. Only when gameplay is the main focus will it have a chance of being replayed. So, I need fresh stuff continually. The other disease is Tradeinanitis. I love trading in. I love milking cash out of games I never intend to replay. And usually it works out OK. I do long for some Tetris DS or Mario Kart at times and there was that whole Elite Beat Agents “Trade-in-then-buy-again” screw-up but it works out right usually. But this love of trade in really fuels my need for fresh games. Buying new can get expensive so I trade in games I’m done with to be able to save some money. Now, I could buy pre-played but I also like getting my games near launch dates plus I’m not entirely fond of pre-owned things. It works but with the probable triple-launch of OS X Leopard, iLife ‘07 and iWork ‘07 (currently all MIA – C’mon Apple! Say something!), I’m looking into saving some money. But, there’s also the new Sonic I want to try and Super Paper Mario in April. Not to mention Super Mario Galaxy that will come soon and other interesting titles like Disaster : Day of Crisis. At 60$ each (plus taxes), that’ll get expensive! So, what to do? Well I heard of GameFly : they’re a website who rents games. Unfortunately, they and pretty much all sites from the US don’t service Canada. So I went searching for Canadian sites. I found a couple and I’m currently looking at Game Access. For $23.95 a month, you can rent 2 games at a time and keep them for an unlimited amount of time. That seem like a fair deal. It’s not just for new games I’m looking at this. It’s also for GameCube games I missed on like Zelda : Wind Waker or Super Mario Sunshine. They also have DS games so I’ll be able to rent Zelda : Phantom Hourglass from them. I’ll probably sign up after I’m done with my current adventures : Zelda : Twilight Princess, which I’m nearly done, and Final Fantasy III.

Oh and Apple : Will you please tell us about the iApps and Leopard, please!

Found this nifty thing from AOL. They have this app that let’s you listen their AOL Radio on your Mac. It’s rather cool with nice little features like presets and a pop-up telling you what’s playing even when you aren’t in the app. It’s free and only requires you to have an AOL account. AOL Radio in Canada flat out doesn’t work on Mac but I could use an AOL Canada-set up account with the app. :) You get a rather large selection of station ranging from XM channels to a station playing Final Fantasy music! The app’s a bit buggy but it is a Universal Binary (but runs just fine under Rosetta). Just visit the AOL Radio site and click Listen Now on your Mac for more info.

Game Overload : Clubhouse Games Review

In DS on February 15, 2007 at 5:40 pm

Do you remember those cheep 200 in 1 game machines? Now, you can have the same thing on the DS but have it actually be good with Clubhouse Games. But how good is it? You don’t need much to beat those little machines. Read on to know or skip ahead to the final verdict.

Clubhouse Games for the DS is a collection of 42 games, yes, 42, most being unlocked from the start. The games range from Solitaire to Black Jack to Checkers to Bowling. They come with rules which can come in handy if, like me, you aren’t a huge card player. The rules are detailed, which can be overwhelming, but the quick summary shown before a game plus a quick check whenever something seems fishy should be enough to get you on your way. Games have settings like alternate rules, the number of computer players, the difficulty of those computer players, and even skins that you can unlock by winning a certain number of games. The games are fun, if you like these types of games, obviously, but they aren’t all perfect. Bowling doesn’t work well with a touch screen. It’s no Wii Sports Bowling. Darts takes some getting used to but it’s fun. And there is no way you would be able to play Black Jack in real life when you have no cash. I haven’t adjusted any of the computer difficulty settings and in some games the AI seemed dumb while in others, which I have to admit, are new games to me, seemed nearly all-knowing. The computer gameplay can go a bit quick at times, making it hard to follow. The music always changes when someone is on the verge of winning and the songs aren’t amazing and can get repetitive. The graphics aren’t pushing the DS but it’s not to say they’re ugly either.

On top of main mode, you have two objective-based modes. Stamp mode makes you play through specific games. Depending on your performance, you get a certain number of stamps. 3 are required to go to the next game. Don’t worry if you suck at a game; you get at least one stamp and you can replay as many times as needed. At the end of a level, you play a previously locked game and beating the level unlocks it in the main mode. Mission mode gives you certain challenges to do like finish the memory game in under 3 minutes or do a Turkey in Bowling. You win a new profile picture for each successfully completed mission. It might be me but some seem near impossible or that you need a whole lot of luck to complete.

Now for the multiplayer. I have been able to play some single cartridge multiplayer and as far as I could tell, all the games where playable! You can also send touch screen drawn messages to other players.

But the killer feature of this package is Wi-Fi play. Nearly all the games can be played in Wi-Fi mode and you can choose which game you want to play with others and not just hope you get to play your favourite game. You are even treated with rankings so you can see how good you are compared to others. As always, the online experience has been dumbed-down by the overprotective mother than is Nintendo. Friend codes are here, so is the random opponent selection and the message system in worldwide multiplayer has been switched with a choice of pre-selected phrases. Sure it’s a good thing for the kids but it’s still a bit extreme. I can’t account for Wi-Fi friend play, though. I don’t know anyone with the game, yet. There’s little lag in games but after, when showing you the scores, you’re pretty much assured lag. Although, obviously, that’s just in my experience.

Final Verdict

Clubhouse Games comes with too much stuff to miss out on. The amount and the kind of games in this package scream replay value and chances are all DS owners will enjoy them. You should get this game, especially if you always seem to have small amounts of free time on your hands. It’s a pick-up-and-play game, as they say. Nintendo also gets major points in my book for making it multilingual, working in every language my DS supports except what I assume is Japanese.

Cooool!

In Wii on February 15, 2007 at 3:21 pm

The results are in for what’s better: Chocolates or Roses in my area in the Everybody Votes Channel. I have to say, Nintendo’s “results show” is surprisingly well done and entertaining. The extra information (Results by gender and winner by region) is cool, too. It seems English speaking quebecquers aren’t so much into roses as the rest of Canada (I assume by the lighter shade of green) but still like ‘em better than chocolate.

Blogged with Flock

UPDATE : Oh, hell no! Nintendo you just outdid yourself! Check out your stats in the Votes Channel (It’s “Voter Data” : The button with two faces). You get points! You get graded Wii Sports style on Personality, Thoughts, Experience, Knowledge and Surroundings. I don’t know how they can know this but it.is.so.cool! Seems I have 264 points and is 82 meters from the popular opinion. Honestly, this is nearly a good non-game in the same league as Brain Age, but it’s free!

UPDATE 2 : How that happend? I mixed up chocolates with roses. It’s roses that won. I fixed it in the main article.

Dogs!

In Wii on February 13, 2007 at 11:02 pm

This is interesting. The new voting channel might be a new, somewhat daily stop for Wii owners and not to mention one step closer to actual multiplayer (C’mon Nintendo! Get on that!). It’s interesting that questions get asked by region and worldwide and it’s nice that you can choose in what language you want the questions. Even nicer is that you can send in your own. I decided to ask who’s better : Link or Mario? It’s a nice surprise and although it’s just another novelty like the Weather and News Channels, I can see it having a longer lasting appeal.

Go in The Corner With Universal, CPCC!

In iTunes/iPod on February 12, 2007 at 3:31 pm

“Canada’s Private Copyright Collective (CPCC) is once again trying to find a way to force would-be iPod buyers to pay a copyright tax despite being told in 2004 such a levy is illegal,” Tony Smith reports for The Register.

Smith reports, “The CPCC said last week it wants $5 (CAD) levied on players with up to 1GB of memory, $25 for up to 10GB of music storage, $50 for capacities of between 10GB and 30GB, and $75 for anything that holds more than 30GB of storage.”

MacDailyNews | Canadian Private Copying Collective tries for iPod copyright tax – again

And now, it’s time again to say harsh words:

F*** you, CPCC.

Not only are you a bunch of greedy idiots for actually believing you can instate again an ILLEGAL tax, hell will freeze over before I’m ok with paying a $75 surcharge on an 80GB iPod. At least Apple refunded the tax last time. And as if that wasn’t good enough…

Money that is unclaimed by December 31, 2005 will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross.

Now ain’t that nice! You should take notice, CPCC. That’s how you give a damn about the public.

Vista And Boot Camp : Damage Report

Vista on a Mac

I got the final copy of Vista Home Premium Update to install on my Mac with Boot Camp. But it wasn’t without casualties. Here’s some things that didn’t go well and others that did with the Driver Disk. Apple, take notes.

  • The installation stopped before finishing.
  • I can’t seem to get Bluetooth to work. Windows doesn’t seem to see any Bluetooth antenna.
  • The ATI stuff seemed to have installed. The shortcut on the desktop works but I got an error message. I think it was for the Control Panel elements. They redid some stuff in the CP that probably made the ATI stuff incompatible.
  • Keyboard Support got installed. I hate that the French keyboard settings only applies to French French keyboards, not Canadian French keyboard support, like my MacBook Pro’s.
  • The SigmaTel Audo control panel installed well but requires a UAC intervention to launch.

The Sad Story of UAC

In Vista on a Mac, Windows on a Mac on February 8, 2007 at 11:38 pm

Vista on a Mac

What you saw during the latest Get a Mac ad (Security) is true. I have seen it when testing early versions of Vista and it’s sad to say it’s still here. It is the wrinkle on a new shirt, the hole in your favorite pair of pants. It’s User Account Control. It is the most annoying addition I have used in Vista. And It works in such a way that is defies it’s very purpose.

First off, UAC isn’t as awful as the ad shows. It’s useless but you aren’t required to accept every single action. To better understand, let’s investigate some situations.

Let’s say you want to create a new account on your computer. In the User Accounts section of the Control Panel, you select Manage another account. The screen dims and a single dialogue box comes up, asking you to confirm that action. How about enter the System Properties panel ( Computer name, allow Remote Assistance, etc.) or Parental Controls. You need to confirm. Really, it’s only the real important settings that require you to confirm. What happens if you need to run a program as an administrator? You get UACed every time you open the program. The ultimate sign of UAC is a small quad-coloured shield. Whenever you see this, you will have to confirm your actions.

That’s OK, right? How about we download Yahoo! Messenger (not the cool, upcoming Vista version). I decide to run and not download the software. The download is complete and I’m required to confirm the use of some Yahoo! program. Something crashes and Windows offers me to restart the install with better compatibility settings. I’m then asked if I want to open the file. I have to confirm again. It crashes again… OK, let’s try something else. Let’s try Skype. I choose run again. I get UACed again. OneCare, Microsoft’s paid-for security program, asks me if I want to unblock the firewall. I need to confirm this. It asks me again (maybe for something different) but doesn’t UAC me again. This might seem reasonable but think, you get all these messages, day after day, seeming all alike. You don’t read them anymore. Clicking Continue has become as automatic as entering a password.

As if the simple fact of having to confirm actions annoys you, do not operate Vista under a normal account and not an administrator account. Think of all those boxes. Then think not just pressing a button but imputing an administrator password every time.

What can you do about it? Keep it or leave it. You can deactivate. Or not.

“You are coming to a sad realisation. Cancel or Allow?”

No DRM : Brought to you by Steve Jobs

The big man with the Pods put an open letter online telling the world he – and Apple – would support “wholeheartedly” killing DRM. Vista on a Mac

I finished laughing in the faces of the Mac Gods yesterday, in other words, installing Vista Home Premium on my Mac. I have a license for the update version and I decided to add more space to my Windows partition so I had to redo the XP install and then install Vista now that you can’t do a clean install strait to Vista with an upgrade license (You can refuse input your key at the install, though, but I haven’t tested that out), and you need to launch the installation from within XP. So I reinstalled XP but as far I could tell, I didn’t activate it before installing Vista. Now I might be wrong or I might have missed something but if someone could test this out again, this might be an interesting hole in the update process.

You can only save when you’re in the overview of the world (quick save excluded – the equivalent of sleep mode with the DS off) and you can only start playing at where you saved when you lost. And who’s the idiot who made it that you can attack your own party? I found myself restarting three times. But I will say that being able to play touch screen only is real nice.
